World War Covid

COVID-19 hit us unexpectedly this year, forcing worldwide lockdowns to stem the spread of the pandemic. Singapore went through a period of lockdown we called the "Circuit Breaker" from April to June 2020. During that period, I challenged myself to draw one comic a day, the most ambitious of which is shown here - a 3-page comic that took me several days to complete. It was a follow-up from an earlier comic that went somewhat viral which commented on the recklessness of some younger folk who thought little of bringing the virus home to more vulnerable elderly family members. It so happened that some older folk too had a rather laissez-faire attitude towards the virus. So I drew this.

The Trio's Journey to the Best

Back in 2015, I had the privilege of being a speaker at the Singapore comics festival Speech Bubble organised by Sonny Liew and Tusitala. At about the same time I did a series of illustrations featuring myself and 2 artist friends seeking out some of the best known comic artists in Singapore at that time. I'm pleased that since then, several bright new names have made their entrance into this small but talented community. I haven't drawn them yet, but here was the original set with the original captions:

Andy Choo
"The trio like to moove it moove it."

Cheah Sinann
"The trio visit the house of Cheah."

Lee Chee Chew
"The trio get "chewed."

Colin Goh
"The trio goh Orchard Road talk cock sing song."

Don Low

Andrew (Drewscape) Tan
"The trio meet a giant in strange drewscapes"

Evangeline Neo

Gwee Li Sui
"The trio venture into the Architrave."

Heng

Koh Hong Teng
"The trio say goodbye to the last train from Tanjong Pagar."

James Tan
"The trio bump into Seiji - Uh oh!"

Jerry Hinds

Johnny Lau

Sonny Liew
"Sketchpacker stumbles into the secretest Artist's hideout."

"The trio run into the resident tourist."

Wee Tian Beng
"The trio learn to be com-dor heroes from com-fu master Beng."

Comics and Inking - Wen's World

Just some samples of comics illustrations that I've done over the years.

These 3 are full-page comics I did under Wen's World Christian Comics (one of my IPs), which I use for faith-based storytelling.

The first one is inspired by something Pastor John MacArthur once said when answering an oft-asked question: "If God is good, why does He let bad things happen to good people?" His reply was, "What kind of a God lets the sinner live? A God who is a saviour by nature."

The second comic has Aly, an artist, tell Fav and Chris about the similarities between art and science, and the book of natural revelation through God's creation. It was inspired by 2 Bible verses:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
- Psalm 8:3,4 ESV -

O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
- Psalm 8:9 NKJV -

The third one is based on a well-known song by Bill and Gloria Gaither called Because He Lives. I had actually lettered the captions but removed them in post because of copyright concerns as the song is not in the public domain. Nevertheless, those of you who are familiar with the song may notice that the lyrics of the first verse line up with the panels in this comic:

Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus;
He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!

Chorus
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!

Sketchnoting at the Asian Festival of Children's Content 2017

AFCC is upon us again! I'm not going this year, but a couple of years ago I had the privilege of being one of the festival artists who went around sketchnoting the various talks and sessions.

It was a lot of work but really fun. Together with my fellow artists, we worked on A4 sheets and took visual notes as the speakers gave their talks. After that, our works were put up for display. Here are some of mine:

Gary's Bistro

Early this year, I had the privilege to attend a series of workshops conducted by Singapore comic artist Koh Hong Teng and writers Dave Chua and Oh Yong Hwee, organized by the National Library Board. We covered most of the basics of comics creation and our homework was to complete one comics story of 5-8 pages long on the theme of food. Here is my final product. Many thanks to the instructors, to Pearly from NLB for putting this together, and her unnamed colleague who gave my comic its title.

Enjoy.
